Author of the Week: Kennedee Devoe

How did you become a writer?
I started writing poetry in high school. I also was the editor for my high school newspaper. I initially wanted to become a journalist, but I ended up in the Human Services field for the last 13 years.
Where does your inspiration for your characters come from?
All of the characters in the book are based upon my real life dating experiences. My dating life has been horrific over the last 15-20 years. I knew that a lot of people could relate to one or more of my experiences.
What are you hoping readers take from your book?
Two Wrongs Don’t Make a Right…It Makes Us Even has many messages that readers can take away with them. The message is in the book to never to allow anyone to mistreat you, disrespect you, use you or abuse. Its about being a survivor of a few bad relationships. Its about relationships dont's. Its about knowing your worth and knowing when to move on.
If you were to write a book about a controversial topic, what would it be?
There is a strong debate over illegal immigration and it is considered a controversial topic in the United States. There are so many pros and cons regarding the issue such as illegal immigrants are social and economic burdens to law-abiding, tax-paying Americans and some argue that illegal immgigrants perform jobs that Americans won’t take. I'd write about trying to find a resolution.
Most writers have a process or method for writing their books, what is yours?
I write my thoughts down sporadically because a thought will come out of nowhere, and I will need to write it down. I jot down things here and there then I combine all the information to make it flow.
What is your favorite genre of books?
 Urban Contemporary.
Are you an avid or occasional reader?
I can’t front I am an occasional reader. I used to be an avid reader, but once I started my bachelors and masters programs the only thing I was reading was textbooks. However I am getting back into the swing of reading.
What are two things you want your readers to know about you?
I am still optimist about love despite all of the things that I have been through in bad relationships I still believe in love. I used to be a very revengeful person. I’ve changed over the course of time, but it was a long process for me to get to that point. I used to react then think about the consequences later. I now have a future and a career to think about so it’s made me think long and hard before making permanent decisions while I was temporarily upset.
If you could interview one of your favorite authors, who would it be? Why?
Terry McMillian. I absolutely love her work. She is an inspiration to me that one day my book will become a big screen hit.
What is or was your dream job?
I’d like to own a nonprofit for literacy for children. I believe that children should have the opportunity to have books to read to enhance their reading skills, and develop a love for reading at an early age.
What new projects are you working on?
I am currently working on my new book. My target completion date is July, and my target release date is November 2013.
