Author of the Week: Shawn Lytle

A&RBC: How did you become a writer?
Shawn: My love for writing stems from me being an introvert when I was younger. I was extremely shy growing up so to combat that I would use my written words to do the talking for me. I started out writing letters to girls I liked. I couldn’t find the courage to tell them how I felt so I dazzled them on paper. I found out during this exchange that my words evoked extreme emotions from the hearts of my readers. This led me into the world of poetry where I was able to write some of my deepest thoughts and emotions through poetic expression. After this, things snowballed into short story writing then later novel writing.
A&RBC: Where does your inspiration for your characters come from?
Shawn: My inspiration for characters comes from everyday people. There is no one person alike and that’s what makes this world so great to live in. You can learn so much by meeting people and experiencing the ways different people deal with different situations. I tend to do more listening so I learn a lot about a person’s thought process. I do an inventory of the personalities I have crossed paths with then if one of their characteristics fit my character then I create the appropriate character.
A&RBC: What are you hoping readers take from your book?
Shawn: I hope readers who read my book leave with a positive feeling about my writing style and my ability to create a strong storyline with believable characters. I’m dedicated to my craft so that means a lot to me. My book deals with many issues i.e. trust, death, and loyalty so there are things that could enhance what my readers are already aware of in life.
A&RBC: If you were to write a book about a controversial topic, what would it be?
Shawn: Abortion would be a controversial topic that I would write a book about. I am pro-choice so I would love to reveal the struggles that women have when faced with this dilemma. It is not cut and dry as everyone thinks
A&RBC: Most writers have a process or method for writing their books, what is yours?
Shawn: My process for writing my books is I do a lot of brainstorming first to arrange my storyline in my head. It has to have some cohesiveness in my mind. This saves me a lot of time. Once I figure out the storyline then I begin naming my chapters. After I have my storyline and all my chapter names then I begin typing on the computer.

A&RBC: What is your favorite genre of books?
Shawn: I don’t have a favorite genre of books because read any and everything. In order to be a great writer you must be well read and versatile.
A&RBC: Are you an avid or occasional reader?
Shawn: I’m an avid reader. You must be well read to learn the nuances of the written word.
A&RBC: What are two things you want your readers to know about you?
Shawn: I want my readers to know that I am a loving person who is blessed to be still living.
A&RBC: If you could interview one of your favorite authors, who would it be? Why?
Shawn: I would want to interview Eric Jerome Dickey because I love his style of writing; especially his Gideon series. His locale descriptions and character development is second to none.
A&RBC: What is or was your dream job?
Shawn: My dream job is doing what I’m doing now which is writing books and receiving positive feedback from my readers. It’s the best job in the world for me. I’m doing something I always had a love for.
A&RBC: What new projects are you working on?
Shawn:  I am currently working on my sequel to my novel Shakedown: The Church Street District which was released in September of this year. My next book will be entitled Shakedown 2: Method of Operation and it will be released in January 2013.

Tony reveled in his new found success but his happiness was short lived when he was approached by a mysterious man who gave him an ultimatum. She is the newest Editor in Chief for Journey, the For My Sister Friends newsletter, and the founder of Virtuous Ink Publishing. She has a passion for reading and writing, and seeks to provide her readers with the best in contemporary Christian literature. Cassietta is currently preparing for the release of a collection of short stories as well as the much anticipated follow up to her first novel.
Q&A with Cassietta Jefferson

A&RBC: How did you become a writer?
Cassietta: I’ve always been an avid reader, but as I got older, I wanted to read something a little different. I figured that if was looking for something different then perhaps others were too. So I started writing what I wanted to read.
A&RBC: Where does your inspiration for your characters come from?
Cassietta: My character inspiration comes from my friends and family. I have seven brother’s and three sisters who I think are awesome and completely fascinating people. My characters are a combination of my siblings, my in-laws, who are also fabulous, and some really good friends that I’ve met along my life’s journey.
A&RBC: What are you hoping readers take from your book?
Cassietta: I hope that readers will get that no matter the circumstances, there’s always hope. I hope they will take from my book that real love is possible and that it starts with the love of Jesus, which is the underlying message.
A&RBC: If you were to write a book about a controversial topic, what would it be?
Cassietta: If I could select a controversial topic to write about, I would probably chose sexual assault. More specifically, the stigma the stigma associated with women who fall victim to sexual assault and the misguided belief that it’s somehow their fault.
A&RBC: What is your favorite genre of books?
Cassietta: I don’t know that I have a single favorite genre, I have very eclectic tastes. My absolute favorite combination is a novel that contains romance, intrigue, and a Christian message.
A&RBC: Are you an avid or occasional reader?
Cassietta: I’ve been really busy lately so I haven’t had an opportunity to read as much as I have liked, but I still consider myself an avid reader.
A&RBC: If you could interview one of your favorite authors, who would it be? Why?
Cassietta: I would love to interview Neta Jackson, who is the author of a series of books called The Yada Yada Prayer Group. At a time when I was struggling with my own voice, her books showed me that it was possible to be successful and still remain true to your beliefs. I would love to talk with her about how she handled the challenges of this genre.
A&RBC: If you could make a movie out of one of your books, which one would it be?
Cassietta: I would definitely pick Be Still & Know. I really enjoyed writing Alvin and Kai’s love story and would really love to see it on the big screen.
A&RBC: What new projects are you working on?
Cassietta: I’m currently working on Hidden, which is the follow up to Be Still & Know. I’m preparing for a Spring 2013 release and looking forward to seeing how my readers will respond.
A&RBC: Where can readers find you?

About The Book

Bitterness and deception always manage to find their way to the surface. Be Still & Know is a novel about finding love after devastating heartbreak and the challenges of learning to trust again.
Kai Bennett never believed that she was worthy of love. Too many years of being mistreated left her bitter and uncertain of her own self-worth. Finding validation in men, money, and trinkets, she has little use for a man becoming a permanent fixture in her life. That was until she met Alvin. What starts as a game of cat and mouse quickly develops into something Kai is unsure she is ready to handle.
Alvin Reigns discovered long ago that in love, there were no happy endings. He had fallen in love once, and vowed to never again allow any woman that much control over his heart. Kai Bennett was an unexpected surprise who made him want to believe in the possibility of a happy ending. After many years of self-preservation, Alvin is unsure if he should trust Kai with his heart.  How will Alvin and Kai learn to trust and create their own happy ending?

Talk About It Thursday: Editors

Do You Have an Honest Editor?
By
Teresa Beasley

We all know that editing is an important part in producing and publishing a book. Finding an editor that connects with and understands the author’s writing style can take time. It is important that the author and editor work together to complete an enjoyable and salable book. How will the author know that he or she has hired the right editor? If the editor is an honest one that has the author’s best interest at heart and can provide samples of his or her work. In addition, the editor should be able to perform the following services:
v  Developmental
v  Substantive
v  Copyediting
v  Proofreading
How does an author know he or she has an honest editor? The editor will provide the author with a chapter-by-chapter analysis of his or her manuscript. The editor will not sugar coat the analysis but will prepare the author for the rewriting process. The editor will be very informative and explain to the author the different steps in completing rewrites. In being patient the author will create a sound manuscript that will turn into a salable book. Will the author’s feelings be hurt? Yes, but for good reason. The author must look at this process as a means of helping him or her hone their craft of writing.
I can truly say that I appreciate my editor, Joan Stanford of Jazzy Pen Communications (www.jazzypen.com). Joan is an honest editor that doesn’t sugar coat her analysis because she wants her authors to succeed. She is an editor that any author would want on his or her journey.

*Just sharing my two cents, until next time.

Uncovered Virtual Book Tour with Shenette Jones

About the Author
PictureShenette Swann Jones is a native of Chapel Hill, North Carolina, but will always claim Memphis, Tennessee, as her second home. Coming from a family of talented singers and musicians, music has always played a first role in Shenette’s life, but writing would always remain her most treasured gift among her other talents. When Shenette wasn’t singing or choreographing a dance routine, she would escape to her many journals or poetry clubs, and eventually even a newspaper staff or two. From music to writing, her passion for life shines in every multifaceted direction she takes.
Today, Shenette is a motivational speaker, a community activist, an incredibly diverse vocalist, and a new novelist. The year 2010 saw Shenette’s first published work in “Home Again; Stories of Restored Relationships”, a heartwarming anthology by award winning author Wanda B. Campbell. Since then, Shenette has perfected her craft as a writer in order to produce her first novel, Uncovered. When she isn’t blogging, journaling, or creating another story, Shenette enjoys taking an aggressive stand in the community against domestic violence and sexual assault. She also advocates strongly for youth education rights and racial relations within her community.
After 13 years of marriage and two wonderful sons, Shenette is thoroughly excited to return to writing full-time and hopes to use her imagination as a tool of inner healing, self-reflection, and a great source of entertainment for others.

Q & A with Shenette Jones

How did you become a writer?
At the age of  7 my grandmother would ask me to crawl on to her bed to tell her a story.  It was something to look forward to, and I later turned my imagination into written short stories. I began to journal at the age of 8 and I still amazingly own every journal from the age of 11! Writing became my most treasured hobby. I joined writing clubs, newspaper staffs in schools, poetry groups, and theater productions of which I attempted my own plays as well. Later in my adult years, after reading an incredible Christian Fiction novel entitled Illusions by Wanda B. Campbell, I simply emailed her personally to share with her what an impact her story had made upon my heart. I thought it was brilliantly written and I quickly identified with her writing because it was realistic and not a watered down Christian fiction story. This was the way I vowed to myself to always keep my writing. To my surprise she returned an email rather quickly and I expressed  my desire to publish one day. After sharing my written work with her she encouraged me to continue with the words, "Your work should be in Print!" I was chosen to be one of her 8 writers in the Anthology, HOME AGAIN; STORIES OF RESTORED RELATIONSHIPS. I met incredible other authors from across the United States, and the experience was phenomenal. Today I celebrate the release of Uncovered which is the full novel to the work that was written as a short story in the anthology. I give credit to Wanda B. Campbell for giving the gift of time to mentor me and encourage me as an author.
Where does your inspiration for your characters come from?
Uncovered is a story birthed from some of the various realistic struggles and triumphs I personally faced within my own marriage and the similar complaints and struggles I witnessed in several other Christian relationships. It’s a fictional storyline but each scenario has been pulled from realistic events that other Christian women have painfully confessed to. I thought that the common story of infidelity within the Christian home deserved to be told, especially with the powerful message of redemption attached at the end! I've met very similar people to each of my own characters and I like to fictionalize and create on top of something or someone real.
What are you hoping readers take from your book?
Uncovered was written to deliver one strong message to people from all different walks of life and various backgrounds. That message is simple. It's a message of forgiveness for others and forgiveness toward ourselves. Forgiveness has the power to close painful chapters of our lives. it also has the power to bloom new beautiful opportunities of love and healing.

If you were to write a book about a controversial topic, what would it be?
As a Christian Fiction writer, I'd love to write a book about the traditional Christian view of gay and lesbian people. I used to have a very strict opinion about the subject, an opinion that I'm ashamed of today. I want to write about the way we as Christians have the audacity to treat others upon knowing one simple thing about them. We form opinions and we desperately try to hide behind God's word instead of seeing others with God's heart. Controversy is something I absolutely love! So bring on hate mail!
Are you an avid or occasional reader? What is your favorite genre of books?
True confession, I am not an avid reader! I do read and I love to read an incredible love story from time to time, but I'm still a mother of small children and it requires a great deal of my time. Perhaps in the teen years, I'll do more cozy-ing up with incredible books. My favorite genre of books would have to be Romance, or self- help.
What are two things you want your readers to know about you?
I want readers to know that I'll always vow to be personal and remain connected with each person who takes the time to read my work. I'd also like them to know that I write from my heart. Whatever I write includes my own tears first. Passion is a must for me in everything I do.
If you could interview one of your favorite authors, who would it be? Why?
William P. Young, author of  THE SHACK. I would beg him to share with me his secret to writing such a profound piece of work that captivates from start to finish.
If you could make a movie out of one of your books, which one would it be?
I'd definitely like to see UNCOVERED on screen!
What new projects are you working on?
I'm writing a book about one of the characters from Uncovered. I write a whimsical parenting blog weekly at     www.thefroggybloggy.wordpress.com
I’d also love to let readers know that I’m also a professional singer/performer with a musical background ranging from hip hop, jazz, blues, gospel and even classical. When I’m not writing, I’m performing or creating and writing music. I’d love for them to check out my music at www.shenettejones.com or my reverb nation page. Book Spotlight: Don't Tell A Soul

About the book

Don’t Tell a Soul, is the sequel to What a Sista Should Do

Remember Pam, Taylor and Yvonne?  Well, they’re back with a whole new set of Sister to Sister issues.  Pam’s husband, Troy, still has his mind on his money, and his money on his mind – except that he’s blown almost all of the millions he made eight years ago.  Now, Pam is chasing her book writing dreams and Troy’s recklessness is getting old.  Pam thinks she can deal with it all, though, until a secret from Troy’s past comes back with a vengeance.  Will Troy’s new friend Logan (who looks like Idris Elba) be greener pastures for Pam?  Sounds like we need to pray for her.

Yvonne has been single for eight years, happily so, but now choir director Kingston is determined to woo her.  Yvonne doesn’t know HOW to be wooed, and for some reason she keeps thinking of her abusive ex- Luke.  What’s her problem?  Will she let go and let God in the area of romance?  She’s also got a new friend, an ex-adult film star named Eva…except Yvonne doesn’t know this girl’s past until they’re in a compromising situation.  Has Yvonne truly been delivered from her judgemental spirit?

Taylor is living the dream – her happily ever after!  She’s married to Spencer (y’all remember Spencer), and providing advice to other women.  So, why is her son Joshua showing his behind?  His anger management problems, at age 11, have got him expelled from school, and now he wants to connect with his ex-convict, no child support paying, biological father.  Should Taylor let Luke back into their lives?  He’s claiming a change, even has his own church…Yep, let’s put Taylor on the prayer list too.

After learning about the accident, Gary is visited by Jonah Brown, an associate of his absent father, who tells him of a proposition his father is offering. Gary is confused and cannot understand why his father chooses now to come around.

Gary's answer to getting over the tragedy of his mother and the sudden appearance of his father is to travel. He enlists his friend, Taylor Hutchinson to come along as they venture off to Colombia. This vacation takes a tragic turn and both Gary and Taylor will never be the same.

No Turning Back is about family, decisions and revenge. The author does a wonderful job creating a story that will capture readers with the first chapter. This is a suspenseful but mysterious tale that leaves the reader hanging anticipating the main characters next move. I cannot wait until the next book in this series is available. I definitely recommend The Traveler: No Turning Back to others.
