Book Review: Escape From A Nightmare

Purchase at Amazon.com

4 Stars for Escape From A Nightmare

When you know in your heart the person you love is not right for you, what do you do? Gabriana has a hard time realizing this in Escape From A Nightmare by Stephanie Acon. Gabriana meets Scholar and starts on a downward spiral because she will do whatever it takes to acquire the number one spot in Scholar’s life. On the other hand, when Gabriana meets Khali she experiences a totally different kind of connection, but Gabriana’s dependency and mood swings keep Khali confused. After experiences some unfortunate events, Gabriana, realizes she needs to do some soul searching, which leads her down the road of rediscovering her purpose.
Escape From A Nightmare is about struggles, relationships and learning from mistakes. The main character goes through several challenges and her ability to overcome them through her new found spirituality was exciting to see. The twists were unsuspected as the author takes readers on an enlightening journey that keeps you hanging on until the end. At times I did not know whether to be frustrated or sad for Gabriana but I enjoyed this character. I recommend this book to others.

Author of the Week: Altonya Washington

How did you become a writer?
I think it's safe to say that it was purely by chance. I've always been an avid romance reader (I love many genres, but romance is my fave) After college, I realized that my love for the stories I'd always enjoyed was overshadowed by my need to see more characters who looked like me. Living in South Carolina circa 1994, AA romance was difficult to come by. So...I decided to craft my own...

Where does your inspiration for your characters come from?
So many places, I'm mostly inspired by names. I spend lots of time jotting down names that intrigue me, it gets me started on the road to creating the man or woman that it would be tied to.

What are you hoping readers take from your book?
From this this particular book Taboo Tree, I really hope that readers are left with a lot to think about such as the choices they make regarding kids and sexual partners to what they'd do if they found themselves in the utterly complex situation these characters find themselves in...

If you were to write a book about a controversial topic, what would it be?
It would be this one. Taboo Tree is the most controversial title I've written to date. The idea of finding your soul mate only to discover you're related...it was an extremely challenging topic for me to tackle.

Most writers have a process or method for writing their books, what is yours?
I tend to hunker down and write anyplace at any time so setting isn't a part of my process. As for method, I tend to spend several months just thinking about my characters, jotting down notes about them, etc...then I start with a premise/overview of what I think they story will be about. After that I start on my outline/which resembles a rough draft as it’s so very detailed. Once the outline is done, I’m ready to write the story. All this is done in longhand using a college ruled notebook and my favorite blue Bic pens. Outline is plotted out on white typing paper. Once the story is written, I’m ready to type!

What is your favorite genre of books?
Crime Fiction, Paranormal Romance & Fantasy Epics in that order.

Are you an avid or occasional reader?
I’d like to say avid, but it really depends on how busy I am. A friend recently turned me on to Audible and I’ve been having the best time getting through my lengthy reading list. Things tend to wind down for me near the end of the year and I’m able to settle back with a few good books and actually read.

What are two things you want your readers to know about you?
That writing is an obsession for me. I’m ALWAYS writing something and that I absolutely love being a mom as hectic as it is!

If you could interview one of your favorite authors, who would it be? Why?
I’d love to interview Stephen King. I once read an article about his humble early days of writing. In the article if; I remember correctly, it stated that he would often write in the basement of his house on an old manual typewriter perched atop a wooden board that he’d rest over his lap to serve as a makeshift desk. I’d love to talk about his journey and how those early days made him the creator that he is today.

What is or was your dream job?
WRITING!!! Being a fulltime writer would be it for me.

What new projects are you working on?
Currently at work on the sequel to one of my erotica titles: Ruler of Perfection.
Where can readers find you?
I’m all over the place. I still struggle with putting lots of time in on the social network sites, but readers can find me on Twitter www.twitter.com/#!/ramseysgirl
and Facebook www.facebook.com/altonyaw
and at GoodReads and Shelfari. They can visit my website at:www.lovealtonya.com and they can always email me: altonya@lovealtonya.com

Escape From A Nightmare Virtual Book Tour w Stephanie Acon

About The Author

Stephanie Acon has been writing edgy fiction tales and poetry since the age of ten years old. However, it wasn't until the age of 21, when she found Hip-Hop, (or Hip-Hop found her) that subsequently she became known to the underground Hip-Hop world as NinaRaw. For ten years consistent, she rocked with force, and played a vital part on the side of Systematic Muzick Inc. ('The OESC' and 'The Murc Unit'). In the mist of performing, writing, rhyming, recording, selling and shopping mixtapes...amongst the community, somewhere, NinaRaw became hailed and dubbed as the "queen". And not by way of cliché props, but strictly because those saying the title "queen" meant it when they said it, and said it when they felt it necessary

Q & A with Stephanie Acon

A&RBC: How did you become a writer?
Stephanie: At the age of eleven, I stood in the bathroom mirror and asked God to give me a talent.  That same hour, I sat down and wrote my first poem. After sharing it with different people in the house, and no one believing I wrote what I wrote, I knew right then and there that my prayer had been answered - I became a writer.
A&RBC: Where does your inspiration for your characters come from?
Stephanie: My generation.
A&RBC: What are you hoping readers take from your book?
Stephanie: The need for change, forgiveness, and most importantly, God.
A&RBC: If you were to write a book about a controversial topic, what would it be.
Stephanie: Hip Hop and Christianity.
A&RBC: What is your favorite genre of books?
Stephanie: I don’t have one. I just like good books.
A&RBC: Are you an avid or occasional reader?
Stephanie: Avid! Books…articles…blogs…journal entries…the list goes on!!!
A&RBC: If you could interview one of your favorite authors, who would it be? Why?
Stephanie: Sister Soulja. She was the first female emcee I learned of whom became an author…a BEST SELLING AUTHOR. And not just that, but I would love to prick her heart in regards to what motivates her to motivate our generation– the hiphop generation. I too am a former rapper and am now an author with my key goal being to inspire and enlighten the same lost generation…but in a different way.
A&RBC: If you could make a movie out of one of your books, which one would it be?
Stephanie: Well, at the moment, I only have Escape From A Nightmare and its sequel Secret Sky…soooo I’m a bit limited here. But I must say, if I had a hundred books out, I would still choose Escape From A Nightmare. Honestly.
A&RBC: What new projects are you working on?
Stephanie: My third novel…The Breaking of Dawn.
A&RBC: Where can readers find you?
Stephanie: My website is currently under construction but will be out soon, like within the next month or so. In the meantime, readers can always contact me on Stephanie Nina Acon/facebook and Twitter @ 1queen1nina (Stephanie Acon). I love to hear from my readers!

About The Book
Have you ever experienced a premonition that you just couldn't shake? A foreboding dream or sign that you deeply wanted to ignore but...your spirit just wouldn't release it? Well meet Gabriana Hilson...
Gabriana is a dreamer in more than one way. She has daydreams of living the good life on her terms, and without compromise. But then, there are the “other” dreams. The very strange and disturbing omens that come while sleeping. They whisper the conflict of everything, and arrange messages that Gabriana doesn't want to hear...or see. Especially the ones about her boyfriend. She wants them to just go away. But they won't. The visions only multiply, and are rapidly distorting her reality, threatening and interrupting the life that she wants so badly to exist. That's a problem.
To Gabriana, Scholar is the king of kings. She is willing to sacrifice it all for him, including family, friends, God, and her sanity. She believes that Scholar is a beautiful dream come-true...but is he really? After signing a record deal as a rapper, Scholar brings Gabriana along for the roller coaster ride of her life. He knows how much she loves him so when the drama begins; he uses his manipulative tactics to hold her in place. He is the ruler of their world, and everything is running the way he has always planned until things go horribly wrong. Suddenly, a well-planned dream quickly turns into the nightmare of all nightmares. Both Scholar and Gabriana learn the hard way to expect the unexpected - for he comes out of the blue. Or does he? He is extremely calculating...and his name is Khali Simone. After meeting him... Gabriana has no idea of the door she opens. Will she discover the truth behind her peculiar premonitions, and make a meditative escape? Or will Gabriana continue to run until she falls?

Author of the Week: Kennedee Devoe

How did you become a writer?
I started writing poetry in high school. I also was the editor for my high school newspaper. I initially wanted to become a journalist, but I ended up in the Human Services field for the last 13 years.
Where does your inspiration for your characters come from?
All of the characters in the book are based upon my real life dating experiences. My dating life has been horrific over the last 15-20 years. I knew that a lot of people could relate to one or more of my experiences.
What are you hoping readers take from your book?
Two Wrongs Don’t Make a Right…It Makes Us Even has many messages that readers can take away with them. The message is in the book to never to allow anyone to mistreat you, disrespect you, use you or abuse. Its about being a survivor of a few bad relationships. Its about relationships dont's. Its about knowing your worth and knowing when to move on.
If you were to write a book about a controversial topic, what would it be?
There is a strong debate over illegal immigration and it is considered a controversial topic in the United States. There are so many pros and cons regarding the issue such as illegal immigrants are social and economic burdens to law-abiding, tax-paying Americans and some argue that illegal immgigrants perform jobs that Americans won’t take. I'd write about trying to find a resolution.
Most writers have a process or method for writing their books, what is yours?
I write my thoughts down sporadically because a thought will come out of nowhere, and I will need to write it down. I jot down things here and there then I combine all the information to make it flow.
What is your favorite genre of books?
 Urban Contemporary.
Are you an avid or occasional reader?
I can’t front I am an occasional reader. I used to be an avid reader, but once I started my bachelors and masters programs the only thing I was reading was textbooks. However I am getting back into the swing of reading.
What are two things you want your readers to know about you?
I am still optimist about love despite all of the things that I have been through in bad relationships I still believe in love. I used to be a very revengeful person. I’ve changed over the course of time, but it was a long process for me to get to that point. I used to react then think about the consequences later. I now have a future and a career to think about so it’s made me think long and hard before making permanent decisions while I was temporarily upset.
If you could interview one of your favorite authors, who would it be? Why?
Terry McMillian. I absolutely love her work. She is an inspiration to me that one day my book will become a big screen hit.
What is or was your dream job?
I’d like to own a nonprofit for literacy for children. I believe that children should have the opportunity to have books to read to enhance their reading skills, and develop a love for reading at an early age.
What new projects are you working on?
I am currently working on my new book. My target completion date is July, and my target release date is November 2013.
Where can readers find you?
My personal website at www.kdevoe.com, Facebook, Twitter, Amazon, Nook, Kindle, and Barnes and Noble. If you’re in the California area of the Inland Empire.

Holy Mayhem Virtual Tour w Pat G'Orge Walker

About the Author

Pat G’Orge-Walker is in a league of her own. This accomplished Christian author and comedienne has an amazing mind and talent for turning her observations of church life into gems of sidesplitting humor. It is her own special gift from God that enables her to depict the often ridiculous antics of church folk without subverting the Good News or watering down the potency of its message.
Pat’s comedic gifts range from a southern folk humor laden with parables to an intelligent wit that appeals to a wide-variety of audiences. Her gift as a storyteller has attracted a diverse and loyal fan base. Moreover, she is a captivating speaker who is as every bit as poignant as she is funny.

Pat G’Orge-Walker has paid a high price for the ever-present smile on her face. This Mt. Vernon, New York PK (preacher’s kid) has survived a raging house fire; a violent assault; a car crash that mangled her body and a viral infection that left her temporarily blinded. Through it all, Pat quietly soaked in material from her father’s Baptist congregation and her mother’s Pentecostal assembly to create the stories that keep readers and audiences howling with laughter.

The First Lady of Gospel Comedy is a national and Essence Best Seller, multi-award winner forged a successful career, as author and comedian; and has paved the way for many in both fields. Pat’s storytelling has been likened to Zora Neale Hurston’s folklore—a documentation of American culture and church life in literature

About the Book

They'd been laid off, they're broke, and their faith is really being tried. But dedicated Mount Kneel Down Church members Patience Kash and Joy Karry figure now is the perfect time to pursue their other true calling--becoming private detectives. And if that means putting up with their thug-wannabe cousin Porky's delusions while hilariously interfering with their famous detective godson Percy's investigations, it's still a heaven-sent opportunity to hear all the town dirt and find customers...
When a thief steals the prized family Bible right out from under Porky's nose and church funds are missing on Patience's watch, these sisters-in-God find themselves sleuthing out the strangest family and church secrets--and up against someone more than ready to send them to their heavenly reward. Now, they'll need their most inspired hunches, their not-real-fierce dog Felony, and their license-to-missionary to uncover the truth and crack this holy case...
They don't have a clue but they've got plenty of faith!!!

3.5 Stars for Holy Mayhem

The holy detectives are on the job in Holy Mayhem by Pat G’Orge Walker. Patience Kash and Joy Karry are cousins who have both been laid off from their jobs. Both women are faithful servants at Mt. Kneel Down Baptist Church. Patience and Joy decide to pursue their dream of starting a private investigation business.
These two churchgoers are off to look for clients when they discover their family bible has been stolen. The ladies second case hits home as well and when a suspect is named both ladies are surprised. Patience and Joy have a lot of work to do and clearing names is first on the priority list. Will these churchgoer cousins solve their cases?
Holy Mayhem is about family values, loving ones church and solving cases. This was an interesting book with colorful characters. The author does a wonderful job creating relatable characters that will remind readers of their own family members. I look forward to reading more from this author. I recommend Holy Mayhem to others.
