Setrina Bailey was raped by Victor Christianson, her best friend Brenda's fiance, while they were in college. Now, Mimi's daughter, Afrika, who is eighteen years old and college bound, wants to further her education at th same college where her mother still bears the scars of the crime. Setrina is unsuccessful in changing Afrika's mind. And when Victor gets wind that Setrina is back in the area and has a daughter who looks very much like his own, he stops at nothing to chase them out of town and eliminate the reminder of his infidelity.

Book Review: Morgan Love: A+Attitude

Purchase at Amazon.com

Book One of the Morgan Love Series
A+Attitude

4 Stars

Morgan Love is a second grader dealing with a lot of family problems in A+Attitude by Stephanie Perry Moore. Morgan goes to spend summer vacation with her father only to become upset when he is called by to the Navy. After returning home, Morgan, has to deal with her jealousy toward her new baby brother and stepfather. Morgan soon realizes her life isn't as bad as she believed it to be and her mother has enough love to go around. Once she accepts her new brother and stepfather and learns that she will never loose her mother's love, Morgan's attitude takes a turn for the better. She even starts attending a new school where she befriends Trey and Brooke. And to her surprise Morgan starts to like her new teacher Miss. Nelson.

A+Attitude is about a young girl who learns the value of family. This is a wonderful book for young readers. The main character is a second grader that many children can relate to and may have similar issues as Morgan portrays in the book. The act of change is difficult for young children just as much as it is for adults and this book provides a glimpse of how a child deals with change and the emotions it triggers. I appreciate the author including the end-of-the-chapter activities as a teaching tool so readers can learn throughout the book. I definitely recommend A+Attitude to others.

Ruth's Redemption Book Tour with Marlene Banks

How did you become a writer?
I was born to write. It’s my foundational gift from GOD. The desire has always been there since I was a child and learned to read. I printed out little stories before I could even write cursive.
Where does your inspiration for your characters come from?
The Holy Spirit via my imagination via life in general taking in everything I see, hear, learn or experience.
What are you hoping readers take from your book?
Enjoyment of an engaging and thought provoking story. Knowledge or reaffirmation of GOD’s roll in the lives of the African slaves and how it does not differ all that much in our lives today. GOD is GOD yesterday, today and tomorrow. His love, grace and mercy is unchanging. Also I hope the readers have a slightly clearer view of slavery; one from a more physiological POV. I try to put all sides of an issue out there and let the reader ask themselves which POV is most like there own and why. Lastly I want people to know Nat Turner was not some hateful blood thirsty maniac. He actually believed he was divinely called to do what he did. What us modern people will ask is, could it be? Believers and non believers will wrestle with the question if GOD would send a man to murder like that even if for a just cause.  Conclusions will vary but it’s a question worth pondering. I give no answers just stir up questions.
If you were to write a book about a controversial topic, what would it be?
Racism among the so called people of GOD, interracial dating and marriage or the complexion color conflict within the African American culture. There are many more but that’s a few.
Most writers have a process or method for writing their books, what is yours?
Get to my quiet place, be rested and let the spirit begin. After I start a novel the characters and storyline take on a life of their own. If I have to do research I have done some of that that before I start. I might have the protagonist and one or two other characters already in mind but most of them manifest as the story progresses. I have a vague idea of what I want to write in the beginning but it comes alive only after I start writing.
What is your favorite genre of books?
Mysteries & Romance
Are you an avid or occasional reader?
Avid
What are two things you want your readers to know about you?
1. I have two passions, Jesus and writing.
2. I write Christian fiction that may have predominantly African American characters but I DO NO write solely for black Christian readers. I write for all people who like to read. I write for black, white, Indian, Asian or Mexican etc. I write for men and women. I write for the twenty two years old or the ninety two years old. I write for the saved and the unsaved. I hope my novels have a universal appeal.

If you could interview one of your favorite authors, who would it be? Why?
Alex Haley because I met him after he wrote the book ROOTS but before it was a movie. He was an excellent speaker and kind acting gentleman. I would love to talk to him about his literary journey to writing ROOTS.
What is or was your dream job?
Writing novels was and still is.
What new projects are you working on?
I have two other novels releasing this year by Lift Every Voice Books, SON of a PREACHERMAN will be released June 1st and GREENWOOD and ARCHER will release October 1st.

About the Book
Set in the 1800s, Ruth’s Redemption, depicts slave life in the south.  Bo, the main character who was educated while a slave is a freedman who now owns a farm and  buys slaves for the purpose of giving them their freedom. Bo is also a widower whose life is destined to changed when he meets the stubborn, proud and hard-hearted 20 year old slave girl, Ruth.

Ruth has known nothing but harshness and brutality since being separated from her mother at age thirteen. Purchased and sold primarily for breeding and the enlargement of her master’s slave stock, Ruth struggles to understand the way of her new master.  Bo is unlike any master she’s known and what she experiences in his care will leave her forever changed.

A gripping pre-Civil War slave era novel, Ruth’s Redemption is a story of forgiveness, acceptance and redemption. Set against the backdrop of the Nat Turner Rebellion in Tidewater, Virginia, this novel shines the light of God’s unconditional love in the darkness of the evils of hatred and acts of inhumanity.

Saturday Suggestion: Forever Soul Ties

Purchase at Amazon.com
About The Book

When one woman is caught in the act of her greatest transgression, it's the beginning of her greatest transformation. . .

It started innocently: a coincidental meeting between old high school friends--first loves--at Butterfly's business, The Painted Lady Flower Shop. Then came lunch, then confessions of unhappy marriages, loneliness. It went on that way for years between Butterfly and Ethan. That's how they built the soul tie--the bond that, despite their devotion to God, has now led to adultery. And as with all things done in secret, they've been found out. Well, Butterfly has.

As a leader in her church, Butterfly is suddenly cast into the spotlight. But she soon realizes she's being used as a pawn to bring down a new pastor--a young man who is upsetting tradition by preaching about real-life issues real people deal with. People like Butterfly. And as she faces a challenging search for truth, forgiveness, and the real meaning of love, she may finally break out of her cocoon. . .

Morgan Love Series Virtual Book Tour with Stephanie Perry Moore

Where did the Morgan Love character come from?
I came up with   the character Morgan Love because I spend time speaking to elementary   students and I found that if they believe in themselves and have a great   attitude they are more successful. Thus, I developed a character to teach them   that very thing.

What are you hoping readers take from this book series?
The Morgan Love series is comprised of five YA titles to entertain, encourage, and educate youngsters. The first title is A+ Attitude. I hope this title   will bless young readers as it is important to teach them about having a great   attitude no matter what life brings. It also has forty-nine bolded face words,   cross word puzzles and workbook pages that are targeted for 2nd and 3rd   graders.

If you were to write a book about a controversial topic, what would it be?
My newest titles coming out in the spring deal with molestation and gay issues. I hope I've done both tough topics justice.

Most writers have a process or method for writing their books, what is yours?
My method is that I first outline every   title. I get that approved by the publisher. I then pray and dream of the   characters. Then I talk into a hand held tape recorder. I send the bit   file to my assistants and they transcribe the chapter. It is sent back to em   and I edit and edit and edit.:-)

Do you believe to be a good writer you must first have a love for reading books?   I believe reading can help you become a better   writer. However, I also think you have to have a genuine love for storytelling   and be gifted in that area. A great writer creates his or her own style.   Studying the work of others will help you learn their way, but you need to   create your own style.

Are you an avid or occasional reader?
I enjoy reading. It   takes me to new places and warms my soul.

What are two things you want your readers to know about you?
I write to uplift people and I believe everyone can reach their potential.

If you could interview one of your favorite authors, who would it be? Why?
I would be honored to talk to Alex Haley. His   writing changed me and I know he could share insights that would make me   better.

What is or was your dream job?
I'd love to be an executive producer and to turn my works into tv/film projects.

What new projects are you working on?
I am currently writing   two series that cross over. Cheer Drama is about five popular cheerleaders at   an urban high school. Baller Swag is about the five  football players at   the same school whom the girls date. These ten novels deal will real life   issues and will inspire young people to have swag in every aspect of their   lives.   I am also the co editor for a new   African-American women's bible called Sisters in Faith. It is a devotional   product that will release January 2013.

About the Books

The Morgan Love Series is a chapter book series written for girls, 7 – 9 years old. The series provides moral lessons that will aid in character development.  It will also help young girls develop their vocabulary, english and math skills as they read through the stories and complete the entertaining and educational exercises provided at the end of each chapter and in the back of the book.

A+ Attitude

Morgan is sad and mad at the world because things are not going the way she wants.  Why does my daddy have to leave again to save the country?  Why do I have to go live with mommy and her new husband? Why does my mommy have to have a new baby? Why do I have to go to a new school?  Why do I have to make new friends?   Why? Why? Why?  Though she is having a hard time adjusting to all the new things in her life, especially her new baby brother and stepdad, Derek, Morgan makes up her mind that no matter what is going on, she is going to have an A+ attitude.

Speak Up

When Morgan discovers that Antoine and Alec, the new kids on her block are big bullies she doesn’t know what to do. When she goes back to school, she finds out that Alec is the also the new kid in her class. When her friend Trey, stops hanging out with her and the others and hangs out with Alec instead, she is worried. She doesn’t want Trey to get into trouble nor have the other kids think she’s a tattletale. Morgan is having a hard time knowing what she should do.  Should she continue to keep quiet or is it time to speak up?

Something Special

Morgan, wanting to fit in with the crowd, teases a large girl and a special-ed kid at school.  When she is caught she has to go to the principal’s office.  When she finds out how much her teasing hurt her classmates she feels bad. Later, while playing together, Morgan and her cousins all share a secret wish.  Morgan wants to be prettier. Drake wants to be taller.  Sadie wants longer hair. When she goes to vacation bible school Morgan learns that God made each person just the way they are for a reason, even those kids she laughed at and teased. Just the way they are, is okay and they are all something special to God.

Right Thing

When Morgan lets her best friend, Brook talk her into doing something her mommy tells her not to do, she gets into trouble.  But that does not stop Morgan from disobeying her mommy again.  When she ignores her mommy and takes her iPod to school, she not only gets in trouble but is badly hurt by one of the older girls.  She learns that when she doesn’t obey her parents she is not only letting them down but God too. The next time Brook tries to talk Morgan into doing what she knows is wrong; Morgan decides to do the right thing.

No Fear

Don’t be afraid. Have no fear. That’s what Morgan’s parents and grandparents were always telling her.  But she was having a hard time doing what they said as she thought about the big test coming up and wondered if her daddy was on the navy shipped that was recently attacked. When Morgan shares her fears with her mommy, her mommy tells her about the good news from God and about Heaven, Morgan begins to understand why her parents and grandparents are always telling her to have no fear.

Between Friends is an entertaining book about deception, secrets and acknowledging true feelings. When a person looks for trouble they will definitely find it especially in this book.
